I have many artist friends in California that struggle with supporting themselves and their creative interests. However, they do not look to the non-profit sector for help, rather they work for young entrepreneurs in their social network, participate in commercial fairs, or work in for-profit jobs. I think the New Art Dealers Alliance, a non-profit art fair in New York that has adopted a for-profit model, is a step in the right direction, which should be seriously looked at for inspiration.
This is just one example.
